Are you ready for a day of enchantment and discovery? Lucerne is a picturesque city nestled in the heart of Switzerland. It offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. If you find yourself with just 24 hours to spare, fear not! This guide will help you make the most of your day in Lucerne, ensuring an unforgettable experience.
I landed in Zurich at 6 AM and took a train to Lucerne which reached the Lucerne stations at 7:30 AM. I had 24 hours to see this gorgeous city and let me share my recommended itinerary with you.
Lucerne is a small town which you can explore entirely on foot. The old wooden bridges, monuments and Lake Lucerne make for an alluring visit.
As we were staying in Lucerne for a night, I first walked to my hotel, yes walked! It was a 15 minute walk from the station. There are cobbled streets in Lucerne which meant it was a noisy walk with a large-ass suitcase but every tourist was clunking around so nothing to worry about.
We booked a stay at BASLERTOR Summer Pool Hotel - Lucerne - I 100% recommend this hotel. It's affordable, at a prime location with amazingly kind staff.
Moving on the the actual itinerary for a day, I've created an easy to refer google map guide here. Read on below for a descriptive itinerary:
Morning: Embrace the Old Town's Charm (8:00 AM - 11:00 AM)
1. Explore the Foot Bridges - Kapellbrücke & Spreuerbrücke Bridge: Start your day with a stroll along the iconic Kapellbrücke & Spreu Bridge, covered wooden foot bridges adorned with colorful flowers. Don't forget to admire the Water Tower, which stands as a testament to Lucerne's medieval past. You get to admire a breathtaking view of the Lake Lucerne. There are cute cafes on either side of the bridge where you can sip hot chocolate and have a croissant.
2. Lion Monument: A short walk from the bridge, you'll find the poignant Lion Monument. This sculpture commemorates Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution. Take a moment to reflect on the history and admire the artistic details. It was under-construction when I visited it but still is gorgeously haunting.
3. Old Town Exploration: Lose yourself in the cobbled streets of Lucerne's Old Town. The medieval architecture, charming boutiques, and cozy cafes will transport you to another era. You can enjoy a leisurely breakfast at a local café, savoring Swiss pastries and coffee. There are several shops in this area, which were not open at 9 am honestly, but I did re-visited this again in the evening.
Afternoon: Cultural Delights (11:30 AM - 2:00 PM)
1. Lunch at Titbits: I walked back to the station because Gaurav was coming from Munich and we had lunch at Titbits which is located right at the station itself. If you are a vegan/vegetarian you should definitely go to Titbits for a meal. There is a full buffet spread which you pay for by weight. There are made to order options available as well.
We skipped the below 2 and just ended up strolling in the city but you can surely add either one.
2. Swiss Chocolate Adventure Experience: If you're a chocolate enthusiast, Lucerne is your gateway to a mouthwatering journey through the world of Swiss chocolate. Located inside the Swiss Museum of Transport you can visit the chocolate museum in the afternoon for a deliciously satisfying experience. You can book your tickets here (psst you get a free chocolate sample as well!).
3. Swiss Transport Museum: If you're looking for an intensive experience, head to the Swiss Transport Museum to delve into the nation's innovative history of transportation. Interactive exhibits and displays covering trains, boats, cars, and aviation offer an engaging and educational experience. There is a good deal on the tickets here.
OR
Just stroll along the bank of Lake Lucerne and have a picnic-lunch on the many benches lining the Lake bank.
Evening: Lake Cruising and Mountain Excursion (2:30 PM - 8:00 PM)
